Architecture

Architecture

We just love this stunning design by Dutch Architect Marc Koehler. The most exciting part is the detailing on the brickwork. You can see the profile created by the brick. On one of them, the tiny Ficus finds its' home on these walls. This house is one of many to inspire our 'Cube Series' - Small Houses by MacPherson Architecture and we have added a touch to our March 3-d model this month.

The Hill House

The Hill House

The Hill House, California, by Johnston Marklee Architects. We thought you might enjoy the clean and dynamic lines of this architecture - if not a little quirky for some. When space is limited - whether by building envelopes, aspect or plain old budget, you don't have to limit your design ideas! Another take on the lines of the cube on cube...

Stunning Console

Stunning Console

This is so gorgeous and in some ways quite unexpected...a console is one of those stand alone pieces where the mirror and table don't necessarily need to match in detailing. The mirror is cleverly designed and full of surprises!

Which colour would you choose?

Which colour would you choose?

Being unafraid of colour is a very brave thing. For some of us just knowing we could do it with one special piece just for the fun and wow is all we need.

The fabrics from Unique, Auckland - by Chivasso, will form the basis of any interior scheme. It is comprised of ten designs in a complete spectrum of colours - some 400 colourways! There are wide width sheers, a luscious velvet and a selection of plains suitable for upholstery and drapery. If you would like to see more of these fabrics click here...

Relaxed and vibrant colour

Relaxed and vibrant colour

Who in their bravest mind would celebrate pink, yellow, blue with a touch of green in this stunning chandelier? The fabrics in pink and gold brocade are perfect...but best of all I love the little separate posies of flowers on the little pink tray!  'Colour Business' by Chivasso is a sparkling, colourful collection of florals, stripes and checks, complimented by a series of plain colours.  Exciting and energising!  To see more click here...

The Cube Bedroom

The Cube Bedroom

What a fantastic idea for a bedroom in the Cube House! Like a cube itself - this is suspended to just 'tuck yourself away'. Another very clever use of a small space within the vaulted space...we are very inspired by this idea for the 'Cube Series' - Small Houses by MacPherson Architecture - and it could be so easily incorporated.

A bedroom in the ceiling...? Here we can see it from behind. The possibilities - even in a small space, are limitless once you start thinking outside the cube!

Or just off the wall...

Or just off the wall...

A perfect way to turn your office into your guest room. Bunks all tucked away too. My favourite part is the colour scheme - the practicalities speak for themselves!  This is another great small space design solution and of course, perfect for the cube office come guest bedroom!

Wisteria Pergola

Wisteria Pergola

Don't you just love a walk in the park!  Well trained and contained, Wisteria can form a beautiful loggia. You can imagine the gentle Spring rain making it's way down these bracts and onto your terrace! Fragrant, architectural and edible plants are forming the essence of our developing new website 'my gardens'' where we will offer exciting ideas for your garden, entertaining and cooking!

Drawing the eye...

Drawing the eye...

You only need a small space to create this sanctuary. Simplicity is the key again. The trees are Hornbeams which have been pleached  (an elevated hedge on trunks) to form a strong linear enclosure drawing the eye. Yew and Box hedging border the trees and lawn which is shaped in a traditional rectangular Moorish design (a square overlaid with circle). The secret here is the enclosure and gate at the end...this could just as easily be a wall with an architectural detail - or 'trompe l'oel' (deceiving the eye!) .

The Great Wall...

The Great Wall...

Chris travelled to Hawkes Bay last year to see this wall he had designed 20 years ago in memory of our clients' parents. It extends 30m and stands 3.6 at its' height. Constructed in block it meanders magnificently through massive Douglas Fir & Redwoods as it follows the driveway.  The wall has a lip on it that is so strong that the largest of branches falling from the trees above haven' t so much as chipped the smallest pieces of concrete. This wall is undoubtedly a tribute to great design, integrity of materials and the meaning of being 'built to last'...see more

Willowbrook Park Chapel

Willowbrook Park Chapel

We feel so privileged to be part of this unique and very special project. Here is a 3-D image of the traditional Georgian Chapel which will be built next to the Manor House and extended out from the Colonnade (which we will show you next month). This beautiful Chapel will hold 80 people and, knowing our clients - the interior will be absolutely extraordinary!  This is just the beginning of this amazing project and there is so much I want to tell you...perhaps the most important thing for now is that the architectural documentation is at last complete after months and months of drawing - which was cause for the next bottle (or two) of champagne! Surrounding this beautiful traditional architecture are the beginnings of a 25 acre country estate already planted in hundreds of ornamental trees.

A note from Willowbrook Park...'We have decided that we will plant a small Truffiere, or 'truffle wood', using Black Perigord truffles (Tuber melanosporum) innoculated onto the roots of English Oaks (Quercus robur) and Hazelnut (Corylus avellana). The Hazelnuts should yield truffles within 5-7 years, whereas the Oaks take longer, but then continue to yield for at least 50 years.  Read more...

Hedging by the metre...

Hedging by the metre...

We are so excited to tell you about this wonderful discovery from Twining Valley Nurseries. Now you don't have to wait for your hedge to grow... and neither do you have to have a fence if you'd rather not! You can make your selection from Buxus, Lonicera, Camellia to name a few and that can come to you as a low hedge, boundary or screen - you pick!  We have given you an idea how to create your landscape for the 3-D Cube!  Aptly named 'Living Walls' view more. ..

Can you imagine having your hedge delivered to you like this!  This is SO clever and nifty - you can create a sense of space and enclosure instantly.

The Cube with a cube garden...

The Cube with a cube garden...

This eco house, the first in our 'Cube Series' -  will have everything you need to be environmentally friendly and harvesting your own water! By the end of June, you will be able to visit www.cubeseries.co.nz and purchase the architectural documentaion for this home suitable for a small beach or subdivision section anywhere in NZ. The beauty of the cube house is that it can become modular to form the beginning of your modern home 'cube on cube'.

We have even shown you how the tiny Ficus pumila 'Minima' on the walls could look!
